Historically, FAANG companies have been some of the most engineering-forward companies in the world. In fact, back in the early 2000s, Larry Page actually fired all project managers at Google because he despised middle management. But since then, these companies have been taken over by middle management. Companies like Google and Facebook now have 8-10 layers of management between entry-level managers and the CEO. Not to mention, this hierarchy carries over into individual contributor roles as well which now have several levels of hierarchy. The only companies that have avoided this trap are Apple and Nvidia, and they’re the only big tech companies that have been able to avoid layoffs. These companies are finally starting to realize this friction though and are eliminating entire tiers of management.
